Small Steps
A step into stories
Stories are way more than the words that describe them, fluid enough to escape their prison. Words, with their hidden meaning, escape between the lines of a story and sneak swiftly into our thoughts.
With time, they can start begin actions, ways of understanding the world. When stories come from books they add to the whole a powerful ingredient: imagination.
Into the story
Assume you read this phrase in a book:
The castle was green.
Your first thought would jump straight to a standard green, a green apple, or a green tree. But let’s imagine the writer decided to add a second detail to describe the castle, making it a bit more specific than the first one:
It was green, an emerald green, shiny under the sunlight.
Now, your imagination would move to all the images of emeralds you’ve ever witnessed in your life. Because most of the time you’ve seen it in a drawing or in a cartoon you bet the writer wanted to challenge you. He gave you something to work on. Maybe he didn’t stop here and continued the description:
That green shone as the water of a lake and its reflections caught everyone, the visitors opened and closed their mouths like big fishes, seized in its net.
A personal palette
Every one of us reading this few lines had his/her own impression, imagining a personal colour, with its unique reflections. And what about those people- fishes, surprised by that sumptuous castle?
That’s why stories told in books aren’t better or worse, but simply way more personal. If, reading a book, you’ll have the sensation that the characters follow you as the eyes of Mona Lisa, know from now that you’re not alone on that.
In this space, we will speak about what means reading and how to make the right approach for children with Maestra Nuccia.
